About The Role
The Area Monitoring (AM) Signals and Markers team is looking for a Software Engineering Manager, passionate about leading engineers in building the next generation of agricultural and environmental monitoring systems. Our platform began as a solution for the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)—a collection of web applications, APIs, and data services for monitoring agriculture with satellite imagery.

While this remains a core commitment, our vision is expanding. We are evolving the platform into a more generic, scalable, and reusable system to create a robust foundation for future area monitoring solutions and products. Your job will be to lead this team, mentoring a mix of junior and senior engineers as they strengthen our core infrastructure and build horizontal capabilities for new markets. The Director of Software Engineering will join the organization to assist in the growth of the business from a start-up to a scale-up with an established engineering function. The team currently sits at 10 heads with the appetite to grow to 50 heads in the next 12 months.

• Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team.
• Define and execute engineering strategy aligned with business goals.
• Oversee architecture, code quality, and best practices across Python-based systems.
• Collaborate closely with product and data teams to deliver scalable solutions.
• Implement processes for agile development, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure.

• Strong hands-on background in software engineering with a more recent focus on people and programme management.
• Experience working with a similar tech stack - Python, Django/FastAPI, PostgreSQL, AWS etc.
• Experience building and scaling small- to medium-sized engineering teams.
• Strong communication skills and ability to align technical strategy with business outcomes.
• Startup experience is a plus, especially in energy, commodities, or data-intensive markets.
